Muni Band Concert Themes and Guest Artists

Finally! The official Muni Band schedule, including concert themes and guest artists, has been posted:

Week 1 – 6/26 -6/29:


Get on the bandwagon! Join us and enjoy this extraordinary musical treasure as it performs its 98th year. If you like good old-fashioned community spirit and pride, then you simply cannot find a better way to spend a summer evening. The uniquely talented Sherwood Sledge joins forces with the Studio Band for our finale.

Week 2 – 7/3 – 7/6:


America’s music speaks of appreciation for liberty, love of country, strength and optimism. Bring your picnic fare and listen to a musical salute from the pens of our nation’s finest composers. We welcome the vocal talent of John O’Campo as he closes the concert in grand style. Come and wave the flag for freedom.

Week 3 – 7/11 – 7/13:


Excitement is in the air as the music of the big top comes to the parks of Long Beach. You will be amazed, entertained, and electrified by unusual music originally composed for the world’s greatest acts. The ever popular singing artist Barbara Morrison provides the closing act. Don’t miss out on this center ring event.

Week 4 – 7/17 – 7/20:


You may not be in control of your extremities this week. The spirited rhythmic pulsations emitting from your Municipal Band could encourage foot tapping, swaying of torso, and flaying of arms as we explore music written especially for dancing. The evening concludes with the vocal styling of the sensational Tony Galla.

Week 5 – 7/24 – 7/27:


Enjoy an evening of music written especially for your Municipal Band including some of the great pop classics from the concert stage. The artistry and technical fluency of the band will truly shine and prove once again that your band is the best in the nation. The studio band is our featured “artist of the week” on this all-instrumental program.

Week 6 – 7/31 – 8/3:


Swash bucklin’, bronco bustin’, high-flying romantic heroes of film and screen. They probably won’t be at this week’s concert, but their music will fill the parks of Long Beach. Guaranteed to be a crowd-pleasing evening of exciting and adventurous music from the brilliant minds of America’s movie composers. Guest vocalist Carol Welsman and the Studio Band add the finishing touch to this great musical evening.

Week 7 – 8/7 – 8/10:


Today’s concert features music with added sound effects. The late Spike Jones band made an entire career performing this type of literature. The Municipal Band goes where it seldom travels as it delves into some of the world’s most unusual music. Come join the fun and be ready to participate. Barbara Morrison returns to our stage, concluding the evenings performance with style and grace.

Week 8 – 8/14 – 8/17:


This concert is expected to be a favorite of the summer. If you enjoy the music of The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Stevie Wonder, Streisand and Sinatra or the great Broadway musicals of the past, then join us for this memorable evening. What better way to end a great concert season, than to bring back Tony Galla and the Studio Band. See you next summer!
